COVID-19 vaccine boosters are due to roll out in late September — and some immunocompromised people are eligible right now. Here’s what you need to know before you get that extra jab.

While COVID-19 vaccines continue to offer remarkable protection against severe illness, hospitalization, and death, even against the delta variant, recent research has shown their overall effectiveness wanes over time.

After reviewing the data and debating the issue, on September 24 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) endorsed a third dose for certain people who have already received two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Those who qualify include people age 65 and older and individuals age 18 to 64 with underlying medical conditions that put them at high risk of severe COVID-19.
